How to Choose an Electric Bike
Buying an electric bike comes down to matching a handful of specs to how you'll actually ride. The marketing around e-bikes is loud, but the decisions that matter are surprisingly few. This guide walks through them in the order that saves you the most time.
Work top to bottom: settle the bike type first, then motor, battery, class, and fit. Each choice narrows the field, so by the end you're comparing a short list instead of the whole market.
1. Decide the bike type first
Type is the single biggest filter. A commuter, a cargo hauler, a fat-tire off-road bike, a folding bike, and an electric mountain bike are built around completely different priorities, and it's rarely worth cross-shopping between them.
Ask what you're optimizing for: predictable pavement commuting, carrying kids or gear, trails and hunting, apartment storage, or singletrack. Pick the category, and most of the remaining specs fall into a sensible range automatically.
2. Motor: power, placement, and torque
Nominal motor power (typically 250-750W in the US) sets the baseline, but peak power and torque tell you more about how the bike feels on hills and under load. Torque, measured in newton-meters (Nm), is what launches you from a stop and climbs grades; 40-60 Nm is plenty for flat commuting, while cargo and off-road bikes benefit from 80 Nm or more.
Motor placement matters just as much as wattage. Hub motors sit in the wheel and are simple, quiet, and affordable; mid-drive motors sit at the cranks and drive the chain, which is more efficient and far better on steep climbs. 3. Battery and real-world range
Ignore the headline range number and look at watt-hours (Wh) instead. Wh is the battery's true capacity (volts multiplied by amp-hours), and it's the fairest way to compare two bikes. A rough real-world estimate is Wh divided by 10-25 Wh per mile, depending on how much you pedal, your weight, terrain, and wind.
Claimed ranges are almost always best-case (lowest assist, flat ground, light rider). If you want to hit a real number reliably, buy more capacity than you think you need, and consider bikes with removable or dual batteries if you ride long distances.
4. Class and top speed
US e-bikes are grouped into three classes. Class 1 is pedal-assist up to 20 mph, Class 2 adds a throttle up to 20 mph, and Class 3 is pedal-assist up to 28 mph. The class you choose affects where you're legally allowed to ride, so match it to your routes.

5. Brakes, frame, and fit
Because e-bikes are heavier and faster than analog bikes, good brakes are non-negotiable. Hydraulic disc brakes are worth prioritizing, especially on anything carrying cargo or descending hills.

6. Judge value, not just price
Two bikes at the same price can carry very different components. A cheaper bike with a name-brand motor, hydraulic brakes, and a bigger battery can be a better buy than a pricier one with generic parts.
